In the constituency
 
  • Lobbying for upgrades to highway 75, 59, 2, 3, 200, and a variety of other provincial roads
  • Lobbied for return of school taxes to residents of the former Morris Macdonald School Division
  • Questioned the government on Floodway Act and future compensation by attending Open Houses and committees as well as in the House
  • Supported keeping the Drive-In open in Headingley
  • Working with Headingley Foods to convince the government to allow them to sell alcohol at their store
  • Working with local farmers and council to find alternative uses for Dow Plant in Elie
  • Initiated crystal meth drug awareness programs in Headingley and Morris
  • Initiated scholarship programs in the high schools in the constituency to encourage creative writing
  • Hosted two charity golf tournaments raising over $7000 (Cancer Care and Rainbow Society)
  • Lobbied government to help businesses negatively affected by the smoking ban
  • Participated in rally at Grace Hospital to keep the emergency room open – hospital serving those west of Winnipeg
  • Attended countless events throughout the constituency and meet regularly with constituents on a  variety of issues
  • Held 6 public forums throughout constituency in spring 2005 seeking input from citizens
  • Was instrumental in nominating the Manitoba Stampede for a tourism award which they won in 2005
  • Opened the first constituency office in the Morris constituency to serve the people better. Also established a website
  • Work very closely with MP’s Vic Toews, Steven Fletcher, and Brian Pallister
  • Was put 90,000 kilometers on vehicle in last four years traveling throughout constituency

 

As Opposition critic

 
2003-2005 Culture, Heritage and Tourism and Mulitculturalism
  •  Proposed a Private Member’s Resolution in the legislature recognizing April 17 as Community Newspaper Day in Manitoba. It was unanimously passed on May 12, 2005
  •  Attended numerous multicultural dinners and events many times bringing greetings on behalf of the leader.
  • Opposed the governments allocation of grant money to an artist who used the money to make jewelry from mouse droppings, toe nail clippings and public hair

 

2005-2007 Family Services and Housing, People with Disabilities
  • Have met with a variety of groups in regard to child care, child welfare, and disbilities
  • Have advocated for community living versus institutional care
  • Was forefront in the Phoenix Sinclair case  - calling on the Minister to review the system and for the Premier to call a public enquiry. He announced the Public Enquiry on October 11, six months later and only after two scathing reviews of the child welfare system were completed
  • Was guest speaker at Manitoba Urban Native Housing Association  conference
  • Proposed a resolution on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder which the government would not support
  • Participated in “A Hard Night Out” where I spent a night on the street in downtown Winnipeg with a homeless person. This was organized to raise awareness about the plight of the homeless.
  • Participated in two radio telethons to raise money for the Siloam Mission – a homeless shelter

 

 

Other  

 
Member of the Legislators Forum – a group consisting of all parties from Manitoba, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota who meet annually to discuss issues of cross border importance such as flooding, agriculture, tourism, energy transmission

 

Proposed a Private Members Bill entitled “The Personal Information Protection and Identity Theft Prevention Act” in May 2005. The government refused to debate it. It was reintroduced in 2006.

 

Attended Canadian Parliamentarian conference in Gatineau, Quebec in 2006. Presented a paper on challenges to personal privacy in an age of technological advancement which was published in the Parliamentarian magazine
